What Is The Difference Between Male Pattern Balding And Thinning Hair?

When a person starts suffering hair loss they are likely to go looking for products to help stop it. The problem with that approach is that a single product may not be the answer to your type of hair loss. Two examples of hair loss are male pattern balding and thinning hair. While they may look the same when it starts, there are differences in the process and knowing the differences can help you get your hair to grow thicker and quicker. When you know the reasons for your hair loss you will be able to recognize the treatment and that means that you will have a much better chance of success. So what are the differences between MPB and thinning hair?

Male Pattern Balding

Male pattern baldness is caused mainly by 5a- dihydrotestosterone, otherwise known as DHT. The man’s body will convert testosterone into DHT. That process is normal, but the problem lies when more of the DHT is produced in the scalp. Then that happens, the hair starts thinning and in the end it results in male pattern baldness. This type of hair loss may be engrained in your genes. If you have a relative who suffered of MPB then you have a greater chance of suffering from it as well. The treatment for male pattern baldness includes Finasteride and Minoxidil, but there is a chance that those drugs will not be effective on a few patients. Another more extreme treatment would be hair transplants, but you should talk to a dermatologist to get all your choices.

Hair Thinning

Hair thinning on the other hand does not necessarily have to be a result of testosterone and DHT. That means that both men and women can suffer from it. While hair thinning can be one of the things you observe with other types of balding, it can be its own problem that has nothing to do with genes. In some cases a disease could result in the thinning of your hair, while in others it is due to hormone levels. Still others have thinning hair due to nutritional issues and supplements can make a huge difference.
 
When it comes to women it is usually due to hormones, pregnancy or low levels of certain nutrients. In many cases it can be damaged hair follicles as well. The good news is that there are treatments for the thinning of your hair, especially when you are not suffering from it because of hereditary reasons. Supplements and shampoos are available (even over the counter) to help you control your thinning hair so you do not have to live with it.

Consult Your Dermatologist

If you are not certain about the type of hair loss that you are suffering, then the best thing to do is to contact your dermatologist. In some cases the treatment can be as simple as a change in your diet, while in other cases you will need to take more drastic actions. Your dermatologist will probably do a pull test to see the rate in which you are losing your hair and go from there. Some of the advice that you may get during your visit may include a reduction in the number of times that you are drying your hair as well as scalp massages to improve circulation in the area.
